This week saw the passing of one of the most well known and well-travelled former members of our Association.
Known fondly by many of his colleagues simply as “The General” Rashid Ali Malik from Pakistan was a big character physically and intellectually.
He shared his security expertise and historical knowledge of Pakistan and Afghanistan on many occasions at ABI and WAD seminars with his fascinating presentations as well as being a much sought after speaker on the international circuit.
I first met Rashid when he became a member of WAD in 1997. His presence, voice of reason and common sense was quickly recognised within our board meetings and it was clear to me that he was a future leader.
He became a natural choice to progress through the WAD VP chairs and eventually became President 2009-2010. By this time he had joined ABI and was a regular attendee at our annual conferences and it was always a pleasure to meet Rashid and his lovely wife Farzarna.
There will no doubt be many tributes paid by the organisations which Rashid belonged to and I know he will be greatly missed by the many friends he had around the world.
I consider myself lucky to have been one of those friends.
